A message from Dr. Rudd including news about this year's One School, One Book program

Dear Village Families,

I would like to take a moment to thank our community for the outpouring of support we experienced during our Fall Harvest Food Drive to benefit the Hilton-Parma Food Shelf and our Cadet Cupboard.  Our Student Council did an outstanding job leading these efforts and your donations will benefit numerous families here in our community.  This drive, held in conjunction with Make a Difference Day, resulted in our largest total amount of food collected.  In all, we were able to donate over 3,500 items which exceeds our previous total by almost double than what we've collected in the past.  Way to go Village Elementary - we are truly a caring, giving community!

Here at Village, we have come together as a school community annually to read the same book through our One School, One Book program for several years.  We usually begin this experience around this time of year, but we are going to wait until later this year when the book we have in mind becomes available.  I wanted to reassure those families that may be anxiously awaiting the kickoff that it will be coming, only a little later than usual.

I am excited to share that VEPTO will support this year's One School, One Book experience.  We are very fortunate to have such a supportive school community that values quality programs like One School, One Book.  Many thanks to VEPTO for helping us to continue offering this experience to our families.

One School, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels and the school community as a whole all enjoy the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading books and other material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. Additionally, research indicates that reading chapter books with older children, even when they are able to read by themselves, also provides numerous benefits.

A team of teachers works each year to select a title that can be understood and enjoyed by younger students while captivating the interest of older children, too. The selection is made after many books are considered in order to find the title that best meets the needs of our school community.  I know the title that has been selected will be rewarding and we can't wait to reveal it to you in February when we begin this year's One School, One Book experience.

In the meantime, I hope you find time as a family for reading - it can not only be a wonderful way to spend time together as a family but also provide fulfilling and enjoyable experiences for children.

Thank you for all that you do to support the home-school partnership.

Sincerely,
Dr. Rudd
