Dear Village Families,
I find it hard to believe
that the end of the year is upon us. Our
students have grown so much this year and it is so amazing to see what they
have accomplished. They have had great
success in so many ways from their work as readers, writers, and mathematicians
to their musical, artistic, and athletic achievements. Our success as a school is dependent upon
many people, especially all of the parents and family members. Many thanks to all of our parent volunteers
as well as to our VEPTO. Your support makes
so many things possible. Finally, I want
to thank all of the staff for their hard work this year as well. The multitude of performances, special events,
and other culminating experiences that are happening this month are a reflection
of their dedication to our students.
In May, we kicked off
our participation in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge so that we can
encourage students to read all summer long.
Students have been logging their minutes read and I would ask that they continue
to do so throughout the summer using a Scholastic website. In doing so, they are part of reading for a
world record along with students around the world. The grade level with the most minutes read by
our Spirit Day will be recognized by topping the principal ice-cream sundae
style. Needless to say, the kids are
excited about this and are working hard to be the grade level with the most
minutes logged. Additionally, we will
celebrate the classroom at each grade level that logged the most minutes read
with an ice cream party. Over the
summer, families will receive reminders to help keep their children reading
along with things to motivate the students.
Updates will be available through this blog and by email as well. Stay tuned!
That said, our students
have been invited during the summer to attend “Breakfast and Books” events at
the Jennejahn Lodge that will be hosted by Quest Elementary School. Last summer many families came out to the
lodge to borrow books, enjoy some light breakfast treats, read with friends,
and sustain a focus on reading and learning during the months of July and
August. The dates and times are July 7th, July 21st,
and August 17th from 9:00-10:30 a.m.
The event is open to all students who are currently in kindergarten
through 5th grade. Students
select and borrow up to five books at each session. Books borrowed at the August session should
be returned to classroom teachers in September.
Our goal is to foster
summer reading and help our students to avoid the dreaded summer slide that
happens when students are not reading regularly during extended breaks from
school. There are also great summer
reading programs offered through the Hilton and Greece Public Libraries. All are encouraged to participate and keep up
the great reading habits our teachers have worked hard to establish during the
school year.
I wish for all of our
students and their families an enjoyable, restful and safe summer. I look forward to seeing you in September!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rudd
