Village Students and Staff Hard at Work

Over the last few weeks, our students and school community have accomplished much in a wide variety of ways.

December featured outstanding performances by our chorus and band students as they offered concerts for our students, staff, and families.  In addition, a number of Village Elementary students performed concerts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.   Chorus students also sang for the Board of Education at its December meeting. Kindergarten families had the opportunity to enjoy concerts by their students that reflect another Village tradition cherished by all.  Finally, members of our Advanced Band played holiday music in the main entrance a few mornings prior to the December break to greet students as they arrived at school.

Village Elementary School and the district were represented by our students in the community through other opportunities as well.  Select fifth and sixth grade students from our school in addition to students from across the district presented with teachers at the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education Conference held here in Rochester.  This workshop session was attended by educators from around the state and beyond, showcasing our students as leaders and learners.  In addition, our students had artwork on display at the 67th Annual NYS Art Teachers Association Conference along with other schools from around the state.

Village Elementary School students and families did an amazing job raising money for the American Heart Association during the annual Jump Rope for Heart event, collecting over $10,000.  All students participated in many activities as part of their physical education, music, and art classes including heart healthy activities.  Prior to the event, students learned about heart health and what they can do to keep their heart healthy.  The coordination across these disciplines reflects the value of collaboration and represents the deep capacity of caring that exists within our community.

To that end, our Student Council led a drive to support the homeless, preparing 95 Gift Boxes of essentials that will go to those in need through the Open Door Mission. Tina Colby, Mara Berretta, Marlene Smith, and Sara Unterborn facilitated the work of our Student Council members.  The students did an excellent job preparing the gifts and wrapping them, carrying on a long standing tradition that was started by members of our cafeteria staff years ago including Carmen DelCorvo.  This experience was fulfilling for the school community as a whole, especially our Student Council while making a difference beyond the walls of Village Elementary School.

Congratulations to the students and staff involved in all of these accomplishments and thank you to all Village families involved for supporting these efforts!
