Three Schools One Book - Masterpiece

March 2, 2023

Dear Families,

We are excited to announce the return of the Three Schools, One Book Program.  Village Elementary School has participated in One School, One Book for over ten years to celebrate the joy of reading as a community.  Everyone - students, parents, and staff - will read the same book over the next month. We are excited to join with the Northwood and Quest Elementary communities in this experience!

Yesterday, we revealed to students and staff that this year we will be reading Masterpiece by Elise Broach.  A copy of the book was given to the youngest Village student in your family. You can begin enjoying the book as a family this evening!  Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes per night. A reading schedule can be found inserted into your family copy of the book.

Digital read-alouds are available online using the link found below along with a reading schedule. The read-alouds provide a fun way to enjoy the book as it is read by some of our teachers.  You will find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child will feel included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about Masterpiece!

One School, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels will all enjoy the same book. Strange as that may seem, it makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading books and other material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be understood and enjoyed by younger students while captivating the interest of older children, too.

Good luck! We know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. Thank you for joining staff, students, and other families in building a community of readers.

Sincerely,
