Our school-wide theme for April is Caring.
Caring is one of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile that helps learners
strive to show empathy, compassion and respect. This trait also embodies a
commitment to service and acting in ways that make a positive difference not
only in our own lives, but also in those in the world around us.
In order for our students to have an opportunity to
strengthen this attribute and experience the good that can be created when
people care about one another, all students and staff were encouraged to
participate in community service. Because the interests and abilities of
our students vary throughout the building, each classroom chose a project that
best represented who they are as a classroom community.
A few of the community service projects and activities that
our Village students and staff chose are:
- Decorating placemats for Meals on Wheels and Open Door
Mission
- Completing Random Acts of Kindness
- Sending cards of well wishes for kids at Golisano’s
Children Hospital
- Creating kindness rocks to leave for others around our
school and in our community
- Decorating and displaying environmental awareness
posters
- Making treat bags for the local fire department
- Sponsoring an animal hospital
- Writing Sunshine Letters to residents at Hilton East
- Organizing a sock drive
During our PBIS assembly time together on April 20, we
celebrated each grade level and the service activities and projects that
classrooms have completed or are currently working on.
We also played Family Feud to focus the students’ attention
on the different ways to show you care in school, at home and for the
environment. Each team was comprised of five students and one teacher leader,
with an even representation of all grade levels. The students enjoyed competing
against each other to share out all the ways that they show caring on a daily
basis.
We look forward to our continued work on this attribute when
we host the riders participating in the Ride for Missing Children event on
Friday, May 18.
