Happy New Year, Village Families! The holidays may have brought new technology to your home, as children often have some sort of device on their wish list. Balancing the use of technology as well as understanding its benefits and pitfalls reflect things families should consider to support healthy children. That said, I would encourage parents, students, and staff that work with grades five and up to attend this week’s presentation of Screenagers. This exclusive screening will take place on Wednesday, January 10, at 7 p.m. in the Hilton High School Auditorium.
Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston turned the camera on her own family and others - revealing stories that depict messy struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Interwoven into these stories are cutting edge science and insights from brain scientists who present evidence on real changes happening in the brain when there is too much screen time. After the 67-minute film, there will be a brief panel discussion and question/answer time.
I would like to take a moment to thank all that helped to support our recent efforts to support the American Heart Association through this year’s Jump Rope for Heart. Altogether, we were able to raise over $10,000 as a school community. Without question, we are a caring community of learners, and I appreciate the efforts of our students. Thank you to Shannon Ingles, one of our Physical Education teachers, for coordinating this work. Additionally, thank you to all families that donated in support of our drive for the Open Door Mission. Our Student Council did an excellent job in helping to lead this work along with Carmen DelCorvo, one of our cafeteria staff members.
I hope to see any of you that have students in grades five and up on Wednesday evening. Thank you for all that you do to work as partners in the success of our students.
