We have started this school year with an emphasis on our
school-wide behavior expectation of RESPECT.
Through assemblies, interactive bulletin boards, games and classroom
discussions, Village Elementary students have gained a strong understanding of
what respect looks like in and around our school.
Our focus
for November is aligning this behavior expectation with two of our Approaches to Learning (ATL) –
Communication and Social Skills. The Approaches to Learning are intended to
develop students as lifelong learners.
They promote students learning how to learn, as well as students
learning content knowledge.
Now that our students know what respect means and what
respect looks like, we will challenge them to apply this understanding to real-world
situations involving both peers and adults.
Through a virtual assembly, we will present students with scenarios that
require strong communication and social skills in order to be resolved.
Classroom conversations focused on the ATL of COMMUNICATION
will ask students to consider:
- Which ways of communicating do I need to improve on?
- How can I better communicate my feelings and understanding of an interaction?
- How can I collaborate effectively with others?
- Am I able to take responsibility for my own actions?
- Can I be an active listener when perspectives and ideas presented are different than my own?
- How can practicing empathy improve my interactions with others?
While the scenarios presented in our virtual assembly will
be deliberate in combining our school-wide behavior expectation and the two
Approaches to Learning, our hope is that our students will see how respecting
themselves and others, along with developing strong communication and social
skills, will help them to become life-long learners.
